Principal's Message

June has arrived and this will be the last newsletter of the school year. In light of this, I would like to thank some people for their efforts over the course of the school year. The parents, your support in getting your kids to school and driving our students to the various events has been invaluable. The students, your commitment, effort, and hard work has been commendable. You have made coming to work a very enjoyable experience. Hopefully, you will come away from the year with a long list of accomplishments. Finally, the staff, both professional and support, your tireless work in providing our students with many opportunities and a first-rate educational experience has been greatly appreciated and noticed. To everyone, have a great summer of rest and relaxation. You’ve earned it!

Kindergarten, Grade 1 & 2 News

Where has the time gone? It seems like I just got here and now we are into June! I guess when you are having fun and working hard, time really flies!

The Kindergartens finished up their year on the 28th of May with a wonderful graduation ceremony. They were all very excited to be graduating and also to be heading into Grade One in the fall. All of the Kindergartens and myself would like to give a huge thank you to Mrs. Hulan for all of her hard work this year. She has done a wonderful job getting these guys ready for Grade One!

In the Grade One/Two room they are working very hard to get everything finished up before the end of the year. Both grades are on their last unit in Math and are finishing up the Collections Series in ELA. We are learning about the First Nations Treaties in Social Studies and are ending with a favorite in Science, dinosaurs. It’s not all work and no play in our room though; we have some really fun stuff planned for June which includes Run, Jump and Throw Day and our year-end field trip, just to name a few.

All in all, I would say this year has been a huge success and I have had a GREAT time teaching in Nokomis. I wish all of my students the best of luck as they move into new grades next year. Have a safe and fun summer!

Grade 3, 4 & 5 News

The final newsletter of the year! Where did it go? June is always just as busy as we are completing all our units of study.

A town clean-up has been scheduled for students from Grades 1-8 on Friday, June 4th at 1:30 p.m. The students are placed in groups headed by Grade 7 & 8 students and are then responsible for cleaning a certain area of town. It would be advisable for children (if possible) to bring some type of gardening gloves for picking garbage.

Run, Jump, and Throw Day will take place in Strasbourg on Thursday, June 10th. We will be taking vehicles to transport the students. If you are able to supply transportation or volunteer in some way, please contact the school with such information.

We have been studying most recently about Batoche and the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. As a result of that study, we will be travelling to Batoche on Monday, June 21st for our year-end trip. Additional information will be forthcoming.

A sincere thank you to all parents this year who so generously provided food and transportation for our class. We truly appreciated your support with these events.

Finally, to everyone, thank you for an excellent year. Have an awesome summer vacation and we’ll see you in the fall!

Grade 6, 7 & 8 News

On Wednesday May 26, we went on a field trip to the Science Centre to see "Our Body: The Universe Within". It was a fascinating, artful and educational exhibit consisting of actual human bodies and organs. We then toured the Science Centre before we went to the IMAX show "The Human Body". Then we went to the The Royal Saskatchewan Museum where we went through the Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and First Nations Galleries. It was a very educational day and was enjoyed by all.

The month of June will be busy wrapping up all the units. Our year-end trip is on June 23. We are going to Camp Whitesand near Theodore to do some canoeing, rock climbing and a few outdoor school activities. It should be a busy, fun day to wrap up our year. We have been asked to put on a skit for Museum Day on June 28th as well, so will be practicing for it after drama night is over. As I reflect on the past nine months, I would like to thank everyone for their support; I have had another wonderful year!

I hope everyone has a great summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Greetings from Mrs. Stratton

June is upon us and the time crunch is here. The History 30 students are beginning their fourth unit: Forces of Nationalism; Social 9 students have started their fourth and final unit: Culture. ELA 9 students are going to begin their fifth unit: Surviving and Conquering, while working on an independent novel study; ELA B10 students have finished Macbeth and are working on their last unit: Decisions. Psychology 30 students are beginning their final unit: Early Childhood. CPT students are continuing exciting projects, and you can check out what we’ve been up to so far this year at http://nokomisprojects.wikispaces.com

Remember to check back often because it is updated when we complete new projects.

Career Ed 9/10 students are finishing up the completion of the Youth Workers Readiness Certificate Course, which will give all, especially the students ages 14 and 15, the legal requirements to work (see information below, and feel free to contact either Mr. Koenig or Mrs. Stratton at the school if you have any questions). The students will be writing the exam in the next few weeks, to complete the requirements.

Certificate Requirements for Young Workers and their Employers
http://www.aeel.gov.sk.ca/ywrcc

Effective March 31, 2010 - All 14 and 15 year old workers are required to complete the Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) and obtain a Certificate of Completion.
All young workers (14 and 15 years old) must provide their employer:
1. proof of age
2. written consent from a parent or guardian
3. a copy of their certificate.
Employers must keep the above documents on file.

  Minimum Age of Employment
The Minimum Wage Regulations were amended to establish age 16 as the general minimum age of employment in Saskatchewan.  An ‘absolute’ minimum age of 14 has also been established provided those 14 and 15 year old workers fulfill certain requirements.

All workers aged 14 and 15 must meet the minimum age requirements in order to be lawfully employed in Saskatchewan.

   Additional Requirements:
14 and 15 year old workers must also:
- work no more than 16 hours during a school week
- work no later than 10:00 p.m. on any day prior to a school day or before school starts on any day

I hope June gives us better weather than we have been seeing lately! I know sunshine is exactly what we need to get us through this busy month. I hope everyone has a really great summer vacation and uses the time to relax and enjoy a break from our busy lives!

Take care, and see you next year!

Snack Program

The recess snack program will wind down in the next couple of weeks. It was once again a huge success with students looking forward to their healthy snack every day. Thanks go to Mrs. Tait and the baking club for supplying some of the homemade snacks. A big thank you also goes out to the SCC and BHP Billiton through the Breakfast for Learning grant program for their financial contributions.

Track and Field

The Track and Field season, as short as it was, proved to be quite eventful. Participants included Melissa Styles, Joel Styles, Brooke Mutch, Zack Markwart, Jordan Hards, Jason Henry, and Cory Bart. A Pre-District meet was held in Raymore on May 18th. Personal bests were achieved. Brooke advanced to the rainy, cold, and snowy District meet held at Griffith Stadium in Saskatoon on May 25th. She placed third in both Shot Put and Javelin.

Co-op Promotion Reminder

Just a reminder that the school is still gladly accepting donations of any unwanted Co-op promotion stamps for pots and pans. The stamps can either be sent or dropped off at the school or contact the school to arrange for pick up. Thanks.
